Christiane from Ak'Ana and members of Devi'ance will be performing at the Wrightstown Renaissance Faire, Sept. 20 and 21, at 3 PM both days ... go to http://www.villagefaire.org for more information!

Also, Christiane and some of the lovely Devi'ance ladies will be performing at the Can't Stop the Serenity screening event in Philadelphia:

September 27, 2008, from 7 pm to 11pm at the Philadelphia Senior Center, 509 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147.

Activities will include a costume contest, trivia contest, a dance performance, a raffle drawing, and, of course, a screening of the movie Serenity. Light refreshments will be provided.

Tickets are now available at the Website http://cstsphilly.webs.com/ Pre-order is $10, tickets at the door will be $15.

We'll be performing between 8 PM and 9 PM; the event raises money for Joss Whedon's favorite charity, Equality Now.

Improv tribal style bellydance, fall classes with Ak'Ana

The new 12-week session starts Sept. 7 at Silver Lake Nature Center, Bristol Township, Pa. All classes are on Sundays. The fee for each class is $10.

Mixed level percussion workshop- This is a RARE opportunity to learn about Tunisian rhythms firsthand !!!

Najib has been playing the darbouka since age 9. He studied at the Tunisian Conservatory & has accompanied numerous renowned Arabic musicians & singers during his career. He has played drum solos for several bellydancers in Europe & the US. He has worked with Reda Darwish, Aisha Ali, Hossam Ramzy, George Yazbek, Aboud Abdel 'al, Khalidah Kali, and Rebaba (to name a few). Isabella has ARRIVED!!

Ah, well I finally have a moment to post!
Isabella Mayalis was born on Friday the 13th at 11:43 pm, weighed 6# 13oz and 19" long.
Because she wasnt regulating her temp quite as the docs would have liked - they took her to NICU for 72 hours on Saturday evening.
She should be home this evening!!
I'll post a few pixx in the gallery!

Christiane's new class at Studio Zen in Yardley, Pa.!

Starting this Thursday will be the first "advanced skills" improv tribal fusion class. We'll be doing group work on sword, zills, and floorwork. We'll be concentrating on zills and zill patterns at first, and doing things in an all-improv format.

These classes will run the first and third Thursdays of the month.
The second and fourth Thursdays of the month will be basic improv tribal fusion. Advanced students are welcome to come drill basic moves; plus, if there are no beginning students in that evening, we can work on more advanced skills.

Time: 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Cost: $15 per class for drop-ins.

West Windsor Renaissance Faire this weekend

Christiane will be dancing as a guest of the fabulous Mahira Tribe at the 10th Annual West Windsor Lions Club Renaissance Faire, May 17th and 18th, Mercer County Park, West Windsor, NJ!

The Faire is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Dance times are Saturday at noon and 3:30 p.m., Sunday at noon.

Adults 13 years and older are $7.00, children ages 5-12 are $3.00, under 5 years are free. If you are a member of the SCA and are helping provide atmosphere to the faire, admission is free.

Overdue update for Ak'Ana ...

This week — Jaz and I take the Collective Soul workshop with Paulette Rees-Denis of Gypsy Caravan! Then we'll be hanging out at the Hipnosis Belly Jam on Saturday night, April 12!

April 19 — Christi teaches a two-hour workshop at Studio Zen, New Jersey

May 3 — Jaz and I will be dancing with our student troupe, Devi'ance, at the Mahira Tribe Hafla. Jaz and I will also be dancing as Ak'Ana.

May 10 — Christi heads down to the shore for the Smithville Bellydance Expo!

June 6,7,8 — Jaz and Christi hang out at Spring Caravan. The evening of June 6, we're hennaing Jaz's belly; June 7, Christi dances a solo at 9:48 p.m. or thereabouts.

By the end of June, we'll be welcoming the birth of Isabella Mayalice!

Yah - its true....
I just found out about a week ago that Im Pregnant (Gods, its still so weird to say that)
And I should be due at the end of June!

Ak'Ana is taking a little Hiatus, but Christi will likely be doing more solo stuff for a while (My schedule is so insane that now I NEED any rest I can get my hands on)
But we'll still be dancing with/as Devi'ance for sure!

I'll be keeping you all posted!

In this workshop, you will learn the proper hand/finger techniques to produce clean beautiful sounds from your doumbek. You will learn how to play several traditional Middle Eastern rhythms as well as how to switch between them. This workshop is perfect for beginners or experienced drummers who want to brush up or clean up their technique.

PLAYING DRUM SOLOS FOR DANCERS 7PM
In this workshop, you will learn new drum hits, and how to incorporate new rhythms into an interesting solo for a dancer (with rhythm changes and a solo). You will learn techniques for playing a solo on your own, as well as having other drummers accompany you.

Ghawazi Workshop Deadline

May 20 is the registration deadline for the Ultimate Ghawazi Workshop in Philadelphia! This workshop is being taught by Habiba, who studied with the Benat Maazin in the 1980s. Help keep this knowledge and tradition alive! ATS dancers, you learn some of the roots of your dance. Dancers in the SCA can apply what you learn to dancing around the campfires of Pennsic.

The two-day workshop is $135, or you can take Saturday only for $75.

Hi Everyone!

I just had to mention that Christiane was wonderful last night leading the improv for Tribal Spirit.

There's no question that ALL the dancers of Tribal Spirit are uber talented and a special treat to watch! Still last night, Christiane stood out most in my mind. She not only stood out in her beautiful costuming of red and black, but she shined as a skilled leader. Sad and happy news ...

It is with great regret that I announce that Kat, who helped create Ak-Ana, is leaving the troupe, due to logistics and personal vision.

Happily, she will still be dancing, with our friends at Mahira Tribe.

Classes classes classes

Jaz and I are both teaching.

Almost every Sunday we're at Silver Lake Nature Center, Bristol,. Pa., from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Format is basic ATS/tribal improv, with some cabaret-inspired moves thrown in. Level 1 is from 7:45 p.m. to 8:30 right now, Level 2 is from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. We're in the process of adjusting the classes so there is no overlap between Level I and Level II, and will be taking a poll this Sunday as to whether one group or another can come earlier than 7. Stay tuned for details!

Jaz runs sessions with our student troupe, Devi'ance, on Tuesdays. She also does private lessons in ATS. E-mail her for details.

I am teaching a twice-monthly bellydance class at Contours in Bristol, Pa. Format is aimed at women who have never taken bellydance classes before or who are very new dancers. Emphasis is on movement and proper stance to avoid injury rather than refined technique, and movements are cabaret/folkloric/ATS. Next class is Saturday, Feb. 10, at 9 a.m. Call Contours at 215-785-3550.

Big Thank Yous from Ak-Ana for making the holiday hafla a success!

Last night's event went off terrifically! $300 was raised for Silver Lake Nature Center and A Woman's Place, plus the generous donations of nonperishable goods for the shelter.

First off, I tip my hat (or my peacock feathers) to Jaz — for arranging pretty much the whole thing and making it a reality. Her tireless energy made this event a standout one. If you had a good time last night, let her feel the love!

Another big thank you to CJ, who stepped in almost at the last minute to work as our door person. She did a terriffic job, and we love ya!

Also have to thank Pat and Marianne for helping clean up afterwards, but not a lot was needed to be done. Our guests did a great job of policing themselves!

A big zaghareet for the drummers and musicians who played during the open floor dance. Live music is a wonderful thing.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came and to those who performed — Mahira Tribe, Alexia, Mahnia, Tranceformation, Devi'ance, Tribal Spirit, Hipnosis, The Archana Dance Academy ... you were all inspirational and magical.

And lots of love to my husband Thom, who was a great emcee and kept the dance floor going as well. DJ Zophiel rocked the house last night!

At the heart of Gothic Belly Dance
is the ability to express deep emotions through the dance in a dramatic style.
While in theory, this makes sense, understanding how to make this happen
physically is another matter. How does one go about transferring matters
of the heart, mind, and spirit into a corporeal expression? In this
workshop, we learn to take regular belly dance movements and add Gothic
accents to them, focusing on expressing emotion, intent, and power
through our steps and presence. From facial expression to fingertips,
we’ll be dissecting the accents that give Gothic Belly Dance extra
substance, drama, and excitement. You’ll take home movement
embellishments and flourishes to incorporate into your own style. This
class is especially for any dancer who is ready to perform or is
considering it.

8:00 * ~ Dancing on the Right Side of the Brain ~ *
Artists, writers, and other creative folk are said to be “right-brained”
They think in pictures, images, and random patterns. Engineers, accountants, and other
number/fact people are said to be “left-brained” … meaning they think more
mathematically, linearly, orderly. Learn to unleash your creative side
and truly be "in the moment" with your dancing. Often, a dancer can get
too focused on choreography, counting of steps, beats, and therefore
become “left-brained” in their dancing –meaning they’re being technical,
and not dancing creatively, spontaneously, from the heart! In this
unusual workshop, we’re going to do some mental and physical exercises that will help you engage your right brain in your dancing!

New to this tribe and Tribal dance

I just joined and am hoping to get into the dance again. I started dancing with Habiba many years ago but the distance and work and parking kind'a got me to falling off. Now that I see Hipnosis holds classes so close to my office I could even go for lunch, I have no good excuse (thank you Christi for introducing me!!).

My avator is Salome, when I was doing more "traditional" dance, I took her name as mine (she came before I started dancing, not the other way around). She shows off most of my beaded jewelry and chain maille.

As I get more familiar with what's where, I hope to post more.

Hey, I just joined this tribe. I've been belly dancing and teaching for twenty some years now (gak!). Anyone in the Collegeville/Norristown/KoP area--let me know. I have classes starting in a few weeks. I love belly dance fusion.

I'm a Pagan and excited that our church has started a Pagan interest group. We hope to dedicate our outdoor circle soon before the weather changes. Once we set a date--I'll put out a call, you may want to come out and help.

As the year wanes, I've been working on letting go, so I'll be cleaning out the dance closet and getting rid of costumes I no longer wear--stay tuned for a shop and swap.

Nightclub entry giveaway at Ak-Ana's workshops with Tempest!

On Wednesday night, Oct. 4, some of the ladies of Ak-Ana and Tempest plan to hit Shampoo Nightclub in Philadelphia for the goth night Nocturne. I encourage anyone who is taking the workshop and can stay out a bit late on a weeknight to come to Shampoo and use the opportunity to show off some of the moves they worked on, and experience Philly's goth culture. Promoter Patrick Rodgers has promised to spin us a set of gothic fusion bellydance music in the Velvet Underground lounge at Shampoo.

As a bit of added incentive, we will have two passes for free entry at Nocturne to give away at the workshops. All who have a paid spot in the workshop are eligible. We'll do a drawing at the end of each workshop.

Fuzefest is over with ...

Our fan routine got a great reaction from the audience and our fellow dancers. We worked very hard on this, and the effort paid off.

The band Animus kicks much butt. All of the dancers there kicked much butt. Thanks again to Azhia for inviting us to perform.

Our next official performance is not until October in Yardley, Pa. If anything else comes up, we'll let you know.

We survived the Kimmel Center!

Hopefully we will have some pics up soon from our performance at the Kimmel on Saturday. It was quite the experience, we had our own dressing room and everything! Our set went well, and we got a lot of compliments. The stage lights were bloody hot, though. Here's to MAC makeup, which stayed in place and did not run down our faces.

Thanks to Jaz and Kat for helping to prep the set in just under two weeks, and for being all-around fantastic gals for agreeing to do this!

Sad news in the East Coast Bellydance Community (Xpost)

I hate to start off the day with bad news.
::Sigh::
I got an email this morning from Bethany Walters daughter, Brandy...
One of our dear dance sisters has passed.

To Bethany, all she wanted was to dance - It gave her inner strength and
meant everything to her! Sadly, she struggled long and hard with her health which unfortunately held her dancing back. It was an uphill battle that she was about to overcome.

She was looking forward to her first performances in May at the Smithville Belly Jam as well as at Hipnosis' Belly Jam. And she was one of the biggest supporters of the east coast bellydance commnity. Always coming to Shows, Haflas and always ready to give a hand for
Hipnosis (PA), Ak-Ana (PA), Chovexani (NYC) and Coveilance Dance Project (NJ).
She was a dear woman and will be greatly missed.

I am awaiting word on services.

Bethany's Silver Lake Sister Circle

I have Thom providing us music. I will be setting up a little display for Bethany - flowers, candles, and some pictures.

If you're so inclined, bring something to eat or drink (nonalcoholic, but I will overlook sangria punch ... it's just fruit juice, really!) to share, but it's not necessary.

End time will be 10 p.m. or whenever we decide to get the hell out (I have the keys, after all).

Let's dance together and reminisce. Let's remember her happy and dancing.

Ok, guys, it's not "Gothic" but it's fusionistic and people have expressed an interest...I have the opportunity to host Petite Jamilla...(of Bellydance Supahstahs...the youn-un who does double veils)...either the weekend of

July 22, July 29, or Aug 5th....is anyone interested in this? And if so, which weekend? I'll make my decision based on the date that gets the most response.

Thank yous for Raqs Gothique III

Despite the conspiring fates (you know it's going to be a good performance when the previous week's rehearsal involves a car fire outside the club), Raqs Gothique III went off pretty much without a hitch!

Thank you to the ladies of Mahira Tribe, who were lovely China dolls!

Thanks you to the ladies of Coveilance project, who treated us to a dagger solo dance and one of their large intricate group choreographies!

Thank you to Haifa, who wowed all with her grace and flowing to the Cruxshadows!

Thank you to Denise, who recorded it all!

Thank you to all of you who were able to make it out! (and from the frat-boy drunken stupidity I saw on nearby South Street, I know this was not an easy task to navigate the area)

And thank you to my troupemates for performing beautifully as always, and helping put this event together!

Greetings ladies (and lets not forget you gents out there too)

First I would like to wish everyone a joyous holiday season and a happy, prosperous new year!

I also wanted to give yas a quick update on the Ak-Ana goings on!

Mark your calendars for the return of Raqs Gothique!
March 18, 2006! details will be on the website early in January.

There will be loads of updates coming to the website Including:
A functional comment board,
a revamped photo gallery (possibly some video clips)
and our "Materialize" section will be full of costume, jewelery and ethnic goodies to tempt you with my dears!

Another chance at Tempest wkshop NYC :)

I just spoke with Tempest and, with her blessing, she will allow payment for her workshop to continue up until the day of...you can pay either through Paypal or at the door for her Dec 11th Workshop in NYC...I have a few spaces available.

Workshop price is $52 for the 3hr wkshp AND the Urban Oasis hafla. Please note, I DO NOT HAVE any more open performance spots for Urban Oasis, but anyone taking the workshp is welcome to watch and cheer the others on!

Also, I have ONE more availability to hang out at my house along with the two lovely dancers of Ak-Ana :) So if you wanted to take, but weren't sure about accomodations in NYC, here's your perfect opportunity for FREE accomodations! Email me if you are interested.

I know since I got there late I didnt see everyone I wanted to - and if I did, it was in the wings...a poor vantage point.

Corvus Corax

Words are really failing me right now.

My feet hurt, my legs hurt. Jaz, Kat, and I danced eight shows this weekend and walked around the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire handing out fliers.

But it was all so, so, so worth it.

Those eight insane German men just rocked our world. Their energy, their music, their laughter (oh-ho!!!!!!*in very deep voices* continuously resounded from their green room area).

The band picked up many new American fans this weekend, and the members were also very appreciative of Ak-Ana dancing. Happily, so were the audience members. There were folks who came up to us and told us so many kind things.

The best compliment we got as we walked through the faire handing out fliers for the shows was, "You are goddesses of motion!"

Heh. We're liking that. ;-)

I'll be back at the faire the 22nd and 23rd with members of Tribal Spirit and Hipnosis. I can't wait!

Hello everyone,

Just managed to get one of the photos taken with Corvus Corax at the Pa. Penaissance Faire. Also in the photo is our dance sister Michelle, as well as some random guy at the end who just jumped into the photo.

The band will almost definitely be back next year, perhaps on a multi-Ren faire tour. I am sure we will be there at least at some of the shows!
